How this calculator works
Combine transport, lodging, food, and additional expenses into a trip estimate.. Use the distance of the full route rather than the first leg. Divide miles by the fuel economy you expect under real conditions, then multiply gallons by an estimated fuel price. Traffic, speed, weather, hills and cargo can change fuel consumption. Add known detours.
Important assumptions
Include tolls, parking, lodging taxes, resort fees, meals, pet care, attractions and supplies. Confirm whether hotels charge for parking or require refundable deposits. For group travel, agree in advance which items are shared and which are personal.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing units or time periods.
- Counting the same fee or tax twice.
- Treating an estimate as a live quote or guarantee.
- Ignoring maintenance, waste, exceptions or other costs outside the inputs.
