Learn the discount formula, compare sale prices, and understand when tax or coupon rules can change the final amount. This calculator uses the inputs you provide and shows a planning estimate, not a live quote or official determination. Keep the assumptions visible so you can check the answer against the actual receipt, schedule, label or document.

Start with the original price

A percentage discount is a portion of the original price. Convert the discount rate to a decimal by dividing the percentage by 100, then multiply by the original price to find the reduction. Subtract that reduction from the original price to get the discounted price before tax.

Use one clear sequence

For a simple example, a $80 item with a 25% discount has a $20 reduction and a $60 discounted price. If a 7% tax rate applies to the discounted price, the estimated tax is $4.20 and the estimated total is $64.20. The calculator estimates this simple sequence; the actual checkout may apply rules differently.

Compare the final total, not just the badge

A larger discount percentage does not necessarily mean a better deal if the original price, shipping, minimum spend, membership requirement or return terms differ. Compare the exact item, included quantity, delivery cost and final checkout total. If a promotion requires buying more than needed, include the extra spend in your comparison.

Know what this estimate cannot know

The calculator assumes one discount rate and a single tax percentage. It does not verify whether a sale is genuine, whether a coupon stacks, which items are taxable, or how a local rule treats a coupon or rebate. Tax and promotional rules vary, so treat the result as a planning estimate, not a final receipt.

A quick pre-checkout routine

Record the regular price, applied discount, shipping or service fee, and estimated tax. Check that the discount actually appears in the cart, review any coupon expiration or exclusions, and compare the total with an equivalent alternative. Keep a screenshot or receipt if you need to follow up on an advertised offer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage as a decimal, then subtract that amount from the original price.

Is tax always applied after a discount?

Not everywhere and not for every promotion. This tool uses the simple discounted-price-then-tax sequence; verify the actual local and checkout rules.

Why is my checkout total different?

Shipping, fees, exclusions, tax treatment, rounding, quantity requirements or an un-applied code may explain the difference.
