How this calculator works

Scale an ingredient quantity from the original recipe servings to a new amount.. Divide target servings by original servings, then multiply each ingredient by that factor. If a recipe serves four and you want six, the factor is 1.5. Write down amounts rather than trying to remember conversions while cooking.

Important assumptions

Salt, hot spices, herbs, leavening and thickeners can behave differently in a larger batch. Start cautiously with strong seasonings and adjust when appropriate. Pan shape and depth affect evaporation and browning, so cooking time may not scale proportionally.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or time periods.
  • Counting the same fee or tax twice.
  • Treating an estimate as a live quote or guarantee.
  • Ignoring maintenance, waste, exceptions or other costs outside the inputs.
