Measure room dimensions, calculate square footage, and plan for cuts, patterns and package sizes before ordering flooring. This calculator uses the inputs you provide and shows a planning estimate, not a live quote or official determination. Keep the assumptions visible so you can check the answer against the actual receipt, schedule, label or document.

Measure the room consistently

For a simple rectangle, multiply length by width using the same unit for both measurements. If the room is irregular, split it into rectangles, calculate each area and add the results. Measure alcoves separately and note thresholds, closets, islands and areas that will not receive the flooring.

Treat waste as a planning allowance

The amount of extra material depends on room shape, plank or tile format, pattern, installer technique and the ability to reuse offcuts. A straight lay in a simple room can need a different allowance than a diagonal layout or complicated pattern. The calculator lets you add a percentage; it does not choose the right allowance for every project.

Check how packages are sold

Compare the actual coverage printed on each box, not just a package label or number of pieces. Divide the required area, including your chosen waste allowance, by the coverage per package and round up to whole packages. Keep in mind that dye lots or batch changes may make later matching harder, so confirm the supplier’s advice about ordering extra.

Do not forget preparation materials

Underlayment, moisture barriers, adhesive, transitions, trim, fasteners, leveling compound and removal/disposal of old flooring may affect the project budget. Some flooring systems require specific underlayments or substrate conditions. Follow manufacturer instructions and local safety requirements.

Verify before placing the order

Re-measure the widest and longest points, confirm the direction of installation, review the manufacturer’s installation guide, and ask the supplier or installer about waste, returns and unopened-box policies. A calculator gives a planning quantity, not a professional site measurement or guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate square footage?

For a rectangular room, multiply the length in feet by the width in feet. Break irregular rooms into smaller shapes and add them.

How much flooring waste should I add?

There is no universal percentage. Pattern, room shape, material and installer guidance determine the appropriate allowance.

Should I round packages up?

Yes, ordering calculations usually need whole packages, but confirm coverage and return rules with the supplier before purchasing.
