How this calculator works

Estimate what an item costs each time you use it.. Divide purchase price by the number of times you expect to use the item. A $90 item used 90 times costs $1 per use before maintenance. This is not a guarantee that the item is worth buying; it makes assumptions visible.

Important assumptions

Think about similar items you own and how often you used them. A product bought for an imagined project may sit unused, while a tool replacing frequent rentals might be used often. Consider storage, cleaning, setup and routine fit.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or time periods.
  • Counting the same fee or tax twice.
  • Treating an estimate as a live quote or guarantee.
  • Ignoring maintenance, waste, exceptions or other costs outside the inputs.
