How this calculator works

Combine estimated fuel and annual ownership expenses into a cost per mile.. Fuel is easy to estimate but does not represent the full cost of owning and operating a vehicle. Insurance, maintenance, tires, repairs, fees, parking, depreciation and financing may matter. Depreciation depends on vehicle age, mileage, condition and market.

Important assumptions

Annualize recurring costs and divide by miles driven in the same year. If maintenance includes one unusual repair, compare multiple years to understand typical versus exceptional costs. Do not count a monthly amount as annual or add fuel twice.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing units or time periods.
  • Counting the same fee or tax twice.
  • Treating an estimate as a live quote or guarantee.
  • Ignoring maintenance, waste, exceptions or other costs outside the inputs.
