Use this as an explanatory starting point, then verify the specific details that apply to your situation. The goal is to make assumptions visible and help you decide what to check next.
Calculate the area you plan to paint
For a simple wall, multiply wall length by height. Add separate wall areas for a room, then subtract large doors or windows if you want a closer estimate. The basic calculator uses a single rectangle and should be repeated for different wall sizes or adjusted manually for openings.
Use the coverage on the actual product
Paint labels usually state an estimated coverage range. The right value depends on the exact product and surface; textured, porous or previously unpainted materials may absorb more. Use the manufacturer’s label and preparation guidance rather than assuming every paint has the same coverage.
Account for the number of coats
If a wall area is 400 square feet and the plan calls for two coats, the coverage work is roughly 800 square feet before other adjustments. Divide that number by the coverage per gallon to estimate volume and round up to a purchasable container size. Primer may be needed separately and is not included unless you calculate it separately.
Color changes and surface conditions matter
A strong color change, stained surface, glossy finish, patching or different substrate may require primer or additional coats. Application method, drying conditions and paint film thickness also affect use. Do not add arbitrary coats; follow the product instructions and assess coverage once the first coat is dry.
Plan for touch-ups and safe handling
A little leftover paint can help with later repairs, but too much can be wasteful. Check the product’s storage instructions and local disposal guidance. Protect ventilation, floors and furnishings and follow label safety instructions, especially for ladders, sanding, older coatings or uncertain surface conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?
The simple estimate multiplies wall length by height. Subtract openings manually for a closer estimate.
Why did I use more paint than the estimate?
Surface texture, porosity, color change, application method, primer and actual coverage can make real use higher.
Does it include primer?
No. Estimate primer separately using its product-specific coverage and application instructions.
